Bordering the western side of Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese Republic lies in south-western Europe and enjoys a particularly warm and inviting climate. The country of Portugal also encompasses a number of adjacent islands, such as both Madeira and also the Azores, two of its most popular holiday destinations.

Portugal has become known for its seafood-based cuisine, with popular dishes including 'bacalhau' (dry cod), 'caldeirada ' (fish stew), and grilled sardines. The country's Port and Madeira wines are also renowned and often used as the perfect way to end a meal.

Lisbon is Portugal's sumptuous capital city and lies on the Atlantic coastline, next to the River Tagus. Home to one of Europe's biggest urban parks, the spreading Monsanto Forest Park, Lisbon has much to offer tourists, with other highlights including its series of public squares around the downtown district (Baixa), the hilltop Castle of Sao Jorge, and the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos opera house.

Other notable Portuguese cities include Coimbra, Evora, Faro, Guimaraes, Porto and also Funchal, the capital of the Madeira islands.
